PCB cover for EMI Shielding
Shield covers are one of the most efficient and economic solution for EMI shielding on PCB.
Different technologies and variants exist. Here is an overview of the parameters to keep in mind when choosing your parts:
Composition:
First, depending of the use of your shielding, you have to choose between a single cover or a frame + cover or cover + clips.

A single cover can be directly welded on the PCB or plugged using clips. The advantage of using clips is for maintenance. You can assemble and disassemble as much as necessary the cover on the PCB. Some single shielding cover might be cut but the integrity of the part will be impacted.

Between clips and frame, the clips have the advantage to limit buckling. The frames can be manufacture with multi-cavities to isolate different components with a single shielding part (also possible using clips).
Material:
This kind of shielding part have specific mechanical characteristics.
Against oxidation: Stainless steel might be used. However the surface treatment can be degraded during manufacturing operations (cut, punching, blending, etc). The best alternative is the material: Nickel Silver. This material has inherent oxidation resistance characteristic. This material can be manufactured as much as possible without maximizing oxidation vulnerability (highly required especially for military and medical projects).

For assembly and disassembly of the cover, the shield requires a minimum softness and elasticity. The alloy is adapted depending of the size and the function of the cover.
Manufacturing:
Most of this shielding parts are custom made. Compelma realizes the tooling associated to the part and the quantities required. For prototyping or small quantities we use only soft tooling (lower cost than a standard tool but not adapted for mass production).
For automation (SMD - Surface Mounted Device) parts are designed with a tip on the top of the parts. this allows pick and place operation.

Packaging:
To adapt the parts to automation, Compelma proposes different packaging as trays or reels. This packaging parts are also custom designed to fit every parts.

To conclude, those shielding parts are mainly designed on demand to perfectly fit your application. For more information, give us a call, our team will be pleased to help you.
